Welcome to Port St Johns

Port St Johns is a small coastal town in South Africa known as the Jewel of the Wild Coast, offering true South African accommodation and hospitality. The Wild Coast is a stretch of 250 kilometers of coast, which gained its name by its inaccessibility and reputation for ship-crushing waves. Today the Wild Coast is still untouched by plastic civilisation and offers rich experiences and adventures. If you're after rustic authenticity with your accommodation in South Africa, this is the place for you.

Places of Interest in Port St Johns
Isinuka Springs

The name means "place of the smell". Sulphure springs. These form an important part of the Pondo Culture. The foul smelling water is used for medical purposes, both internally and external. If you do venture up to the springs, please respect the local's culture and do watch what you step in!.

The Gap & Blow Hole

Take the road up through Mtumbane Township (between Town and Second Beach). Turn right and drive to the end of the road. Stop and walk down. Please be careful. The blow hole is at its best when seas are rough. Water is forced into a narrow gully which ends in a natural chimney-like hole like from which the water shoots into the air for about 20 meters. A warning to the venture some. Keep your distance; people have been sucked into the blowhole never to be seen again.

Umngazi River Valley

The common belief is that Umngazi (Mngazi) means "Blood" but linguists' belief that it refers to thorn trees in the valley, "Umga". This river also opens to the sea through a wide lagoon. Popular with fisherman and water sports enthusiasts. Superb for bird watching.

The Cape Herms Lighthouse

The lighthouse is the property of Spoor net (South African Harbours). It is a restricted area, but permission to see the inside of the building can be obtained from our lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse celebrated its 100th birthday in 2005. Tel: 047 564 1016

These marine mammals can be seen all year round, but are best seen during the months of June and July during the annual sardine run. Dolphins can be spotted all year round. Often playing in the surf at Second Beach. Common porpoise and Bottle Nose dolphin are the most common. Rare sightings of the more uncommon species such as Heavy side dolphin and Risso's dolphin happen out at sea, during the Sardine Run.

Airfield and Dams

Situated on top of the Mount Thesiger. This was part of the Military Base of the former Transkei Military during the independence years. There are two dams, the old (small) and new one. Good bird watching. The airfield is 1.2kms long and now used for private aircraft. The view from the end is unsurpassed. Please note that the cliff edge is not far from the end of the runway. Baboons are sometimes seen up here and if you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one of the few remaining leopards. This is a Definite must see!!! .
